Eid is quickly approaching (maybe not as quickly as some would like). This year, Alhamdulillah, many of the mosques and centers in Florida were open. They offered creative ways for the community to gather as safely as possible. From traditional indoor seating with social distancing to outdoor and Drive-in options, it was better than last year’s online Zoom gatherings. This year, we couldn’t blame the Coronavirus for keeping us apart as a community.

We all want to celebrate Eid with a big meal, but not have to do the dishes. The Halal food scene in Orlando is evolving as I discussed with Dalia Colon of NPR’s The Zest Podcast. So every year, I publish my Top 5 Halal spots around Orlando to celebrate Eid. This year Eid Orlando is hosting a Drive Thru Eid Parade for the kids at the Orlando Convention Center off I-Drive. If you are in the area, there are several Halal restaurants to visit afterwards. I made a quick guide on YouTube and also have a blog post about the Halal Restaurants on I-Drive too.

The Results are In: Instagram Poll

I did a poll on my Instagram account where half of respondents said they were comfortable with in person dine-in options at restaurants. So this list, as in previous pre-pandemic years, will focus on restaurants that are providing a good overall dine-in experience for families. Factors considered are food quality, atmosphere and customer service.

The poll also shows half are hesitant, so I refer you to my previous list which focused on take-out option.

This family-owned formal service Halal restaurant offers a calm relaxing atmosphere with traditional Middle-Eastern cuisine. The dim lighting and earth tone colours and décor give the illusion of being in a North African desert oasis at twilight. There are many large semi-private booths that line the wall to accommodate parties of 4-6, but if you have a larger group the tables at the center of the restaurant are the spot to be.   Definitely try the combo platter to get a sample of the Kafta, Kabob and Chicken Tawook.

Located off SandLake near Universal Studio’s, this Halal middle Eastern spot has recently switched ownership and physically shifted to an adjacent suite. The covered outdoor seating creates for an excellent spot to spend the day under the warm Florida sun. The menu hasn’t changed much and they continue to offer traditional Middle-Eastern wraps and rice platters of savory grilled meats.  The price point is a little higher because of it’s location off Restaurants Row.

3. Makani Good Mood Food

Located in Icon Park, under the neon light glow of the Orlando Eye, Makani’s offer mostly Egyptian cuisine. The atmosphere is absolutely stunning with an array of intricate mirrors and glass chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. Also are large black and white photos of famous Egyptian movie stars to create a nostalgic classy feel. There is also covered outdoor seating with a view of the Orlando Eye. You may experience sticker shock when you see the menu prices, but it’s  likely because it is in the heart of the tourist district off I-Drive and their strong focus on service, based on their Google Reviews. If you invested in Bitcoin, DogeCoin or GameStop, don’t worry about it, Diamond Hands to the Moon. Disclaimer: I ate there during their soft launch pre-pandemic and haven’t made it back since, so let me know how the food is if you go.

While not known for a exemplary dining service, Chaat House continues to be a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. The expansive and consistently good quality menu along with their reasonable prices continues to draw in customers. There is a large indoor dining space as well as outdoor seating. The best part is after your meal you can indulge on their many Indian sweets on display.

Located off State Road 436, this family-owned Turkish restaurant offers an authentic take on Turkish Cuisine. The flavor profile of the freshly grilled meats and gyro taste that much better after fasting for a month. The food presentation and portions create great value. The restaurant layout is a little awkward to navigate and there is limited parking in front of the restaurant, but these are quickly forgot as you examine the décor of the restaurant and begin to eat. Definitely a good idea to try the Doner/Gyro as they make it in house.

There you have it, Ramadhan has come and gone. I want to thank all the volunteers and organizers for going above and beyond to make this Ramadhan special. I also want to thank all those that did their part to keep others safe, be it getting vaccinated, wearing a mask, socially distancing or just being patient with hiccups in the process. In Florida, we were fortunate to experience Ramadhan in a more normal manner compared to other communities who are experiencing surges in infections and/or continued lockdowns.

Eid Mubarak to all!
