Guru’s Review: Hot Krust, Orlando

Ever wondered what a Halal Panera would look like? Well if you are in Orlando, you’ll want to check out Hot Krust, a Halal panini shop that is sure to surprise and delight. They have been open for about 4 years and are located near I-Drive and Universal Studios in the Whole Foods Plaza off I-4 and Sandlake. This family owned Halal restaurant takes pride in offering quality local ingredients and combining them into tasty and healthy eats.

It can be a little hard to spot off the main intersection but it is located in the Whole Foods Plaza next to the Dunkin Donuts. It’s close proximity to Universal Studios and I-Drive make it a perfect spot for retreat for visitors who have spent the day outdoors looking for a quick refreshing bite to eat. There is plenty of free parking in the Plaza.

This fast casual spot is set up for dining parties of 4-6 to sit at the many tables spaced across the restaurant. The brick wall theme and table layout creates that neighborhood Deli feel and welcomes you in. The counter to order is in the back with the menu hanging overhead. There is also covered outdoor seating.

They use local and unique ingredients to create unique flavor profiles for their paninis. The owners being from the West Indies/Caribbean insert some of their favorite flavor profiles to create some spicy kick to their creations. The paninis are made to order and can be customized if there components that you would prefer to leave out. The Burgernini is truly a one-of-kind for the Orlando Burger scene and I think is a definite must try. I think the next time I update my Top 5 Halal Burgers for Orlando, this will be a contender. If by chance you are looking for healthier options like vegetarian, vegan or gluten free, they have many choices for that. They have the Impossible Burger which is all plant based creating all the rage these days. I haven’t tried and can’t bring myself to go to a Halal restaurant and not order meats.

Mrs Halal Food Guru on the other hand has and would definitely recommend the Tuna Melt Panini (yes this is her first official recommendation on the site.) Their waffle fries are air fried which also provide for healthier options.

Note: The chili is not Halal and the turkey has to be specified as Halal as they carry both. Otherwise everything else is Halal according to the Muslim Owner.

The restaurant is setup as a counter service but they bring the food to your table when you dine in. The owner, previously started Tenders near UCF and then branched out to open Hot Krust. The staff are very friendly and helpful especially if you need help navigating the menu. They are open 7 days a week which is very convenient.

Given that it is in a tourist hub in Orlando, there is a premium to pay. But the portion and taste of the meal create value. Most panini sandwiches range in the 7 to 10 USD range. The burgerinini can cost around $10 USD, but is well worth it if you are looking for something new to try. Furthermore, they have daily deals to create additional value.

This fast casual counter service Halal panini shop is located in the heart of the tourist district in Orlando close to I-Drive, Universal Studios and the Orlando Eye. They serve up various made to order sandwich creations and focus on healthier ingredients and options. They have several vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options including the Impossible Burger, a plant based burger. They create a lot of value with their unique menu and combo deals. If you’re in for a refreshing meal that isn’t going to weigh you down, then Hot Krust is on the list to consider.
