Guru’s Rapid Review: Digino’s New York Pizza
City: Lake Mary, FL (North of Orlando)
Digino’s New York Pizza is located in Lake Mary, north of Orlando. It’s a local fast-food chain serving up typical Italian-American classics like pizza, calzone, stromboli, wings and burgers. This particular location is Muslim owned, so they also serve Halal meats along side their non-halal meat menu.
This is the only store of the chain that offers Halal meats and it is important to specify when ordering for Halal meats. The staff appears to be well aware of the differences and attentive to cater to their Muslim clients.
Their underlying inspiration is to bring New York style pizza to the South. The pizza comes hot out of the oven with a heap of cheese and a thin dense crunchy crust, but it doesn’t really remind me of authentic New York style pizza. It is still good compared to some big pizza chain brands. They offer all sorts of pizza topping combinations and one of their specialty pizzas is the philly cheesesteak pizza. The pizza is topped with thinly sliced gyro meat, green peppers, onions and loads of cheese.
Other classic American fast foods are on the menu. One highlight are the wings which can be ordered at various degrees of heat, which can be intense without screaming tabasco sauce overload.
This location is set up for pick-up rather than dining in. Their counter-service style allows for rapid takeout orders so you don’t spend too much time in the restaurant. They are able to accommodate special requests as needed. The friendliness of the staff can vary based on how busy they are.
It is located in a strip mall amongst several large shopping plazas along the busy street of Lake Mary Blvd close to the I-4 entry/exit ramps. It is not visible or directly accessible from the main road, Lake Mary Blvd. The entrance to the plaza is off Lake Emma Rd, but an island prevents making left turns into the entry way, so it is only accessible via a right turn off Lake Emma Rd. As an alternative, it is indirectly accessible from Lake Mary Blvd through the Shell Gas Station, which is a good landmark when trying to find it.
The shop is set up for takeout orders but there are a couple of small booths set up for dining in.
As a fast-food restaurant it offers great value of hungry diners. The pizza prices are competitive with other independent pizza shops in the area. The menu consists of items to suit all budget ranges. For a standard large 16 ‘’ pizza, you can expect to pay in the $8 to $12 range depending on the toppings.
This restaurant is best known for its pizza and wings and delivers value. It is located in Orlando North so it can be a ways away for Muslim guests who are visiting the theme park area, but if you’re in the area it is worth a try. Be sure to remember to specifically ask for halal meats to avoid any confusion.
