Guru’s Rapid Review: Kabob King, Orlando, Fl
Located in Orlando, away from the glitz and glamour of the tourist attractions, Kabob King offers an array of spectacular Indo-Pakistani dishes to delight customers craving authentic South-Asian cuisine at a fair price. It has been open for several years and underwent expansion in the dining area to accommodate for large family dinner parties.
The food is the main draw to the restaurant. It is savory and spicy, an excellent mix for South-Asian cuisine. It leaves your mouth wanting more as it burns a hole in your stomach. The menu is expansive which allows you to explore any meal combination you desire. The barbeque grill menu has a great smoky flavor.
However, little attention is paid to plating or presentation, which is a shame as it detracts from the dining experience. The lack of attention to cleanliness of the restaurant also detracts from the dining experience making one wonder what state the kitchen is in. However, if you can look past that and trust that the Health Department did a proper inspection, then your taste buds are in for a treat.
The restaurant can be a little confusing to find as it is located in a long strip plaza recessed off of the main road. As a landmark, there is a McDonalds and KFC in the same plaza that is visible from the main road (South Orange Blossom Trail). There is plenty of parking in front of the restaurant.
Entering the restaurant, it is clear that little attention is given to create a coherent, comforting and clean atmosphere. The floor and walls show their age from the moment you walk in. The seating area is haphazardly arranged creating bottlenecks for patrons and staff to maneuver. In the expanded addition, oversized plastic tables are constantly in flux to accommodate whatever size party happens to occupy that spot. Around these tables are a mix of wood, metal and plastic chairs. It’s a form of organized chaos when the restaurant is busy.
A nice feature is the designated prayer area in the back of the restaurant which is convenient.
Attention to service is just as haphazard as the layout of the restaurant, especially if they are busy. Their main focus is to get your order and bring out the food. Any additional requests, such as for extra utensils or water are tended to eventually, hopefully before you’ve finished your meal.
Another key draw to the restaurant is the reasonably priced foods. The portions are generous so it is best to order as a family and share dishes amongst everyone. You’ll spend $10-15 per main entrée and add on for naan or rice which are extras.
If you’re looking for authentic South-Asian food without the frills of attentive service or a well maintained, clean location, then Kabob King is your spot. As long as you can look past all the detractors, you’ll likely enjoy the foods and have a good dining experience. The food is consistently spectacular and the reviews online from repeat customers is there to back up this claim. This is a good location for a large family dinner as there is plenty of room in the expanded area and the portions are such that they can be shared amongst family and friends.
