Guru’s Rapid Review: Slim Orlando’s Philly Steak & Gyro, Orlando, FL
Located near Disney World, this site has been an anchor in the halal fast-food scene over the years. They are open 7 days a week and on most nights they are open late, till 1 am which is a key feature if you’re looking for a late night meal as there are no other halal meat options at those hours. Its casual atmosphere and indoor/outdoor seating make the location a common spot for hanging out amongst locals and visitors. For a late night craving or quick meal on the go, this restaurant continues to be a viable option.
The restaurant offers the typical halal fast-food sandwiches with a middle-eastern flare. Their menu has remained consistent over the many years it has been open and has not changed very much. When they first opened, the Philly CheeseSteak was a star on the menu. However as time has passed, it has not evolved in quality or presentation to compete with newer halal-fast food restaurants providing similar offerings. It is however, still very satisfying as far as Philly CheeseSteaks go and they use real cheese slices verse the traditional cheese spreads from a can. One unique item on the menu is their Cuban Turkey Sandwich. While it is processed deli turkey slices it does come in a hearty portion. No other halal restaurants in the area offer this particular item. While there are no spectacular items on the menu, the variety of chicken, gyro and steak options allow for any late night craving to be satisfied.
Customer service at this fast-food restaurant is not one of their top priorities. Their level of service and attention to detail has not evolved as newer, more customer-centric halal restaurants have opened in the area. Given it is a fast-food restaurant with emphasis on takeout, there is no real expectation for exceptional service; however they should meet some minimum standards. Most employees do adhere to such basic principles, however there are some that are more focused on completing the orders as quickly as possible sacrificing attention to details and opportunities to create a warm, welcoming experience for the consumer. This is reflected in their many reviews across review websites which detail customer experiences of employees not paying attention to their needs, long wait time for orders and inconsistent meal quality. There are times when the restaurant is busy and the service is usually the first to suffer as they may be understaffed. A work around this that many locals have used is to call in their orders ahead of time and not make too many special requests or deviations from the standard menu. It seems to work well, but it’s best to check the order for accuracy when paying for it at the counter.
It is a fast-food counter-service restaurant located in a strip mall near Winn-Dixie grocery store. It is just a few traffic lights north of the northern entrance of Disney which is convenient for tourists that are visiting the area. The size of the indoor seating area is modest, however with the additional seating outside, it can accommodate a large group or several smaller parties. The décor is basic with the focus on the counter with its large glass-display of various beverage options. Beyond the basic soft drink array, they carry various fruit drinks and iced-tea options. Above the counter is a picture menu with all the various combo items they offer. Although the items are not numbered sequentially on the menu above the counter, they can be requested by either stating the item or the number. From a cleanliness perspective, the age of the location does show. The restroom is tucked away in the back of the restaurant and could at times use additional attention.
As a fast-food restaurant, there prices are very competitive. Where they lack in other area of evaluation, they make up for in pricing. The portions are appropriate for the pricing. It is possible to get a cheeseburger with fries for under $6 + tax. Their pricing continues to make them a viable option for a quick bite to eat even late at night.
This restaurant continues to be popular amongst locals and tourists as it serves a convenient array of halal fast-food options. Being open late in a tourist area where many restaurants close earlier is a clear benefit and being the only halal restaurant open past midnight plays well to its strengths and food offerings.
